Tewa Pueblo Women's Choir / Tewa from San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico
Any trip to the southwest is a treat, but this one proved to be even more so. We arrived in San Juan, a quiet Pueblo belonging to the Tewa people. Libby Marcus, the woman we had contacted, had gathered together as many of the choir together as could make it so that we could record them in the Pueblo's chapel. Many of the women are in their 70's and 80's and have been singing together for many years. They transpose traditional church hymns into the Tewa language--truly beautiful and moving.
Libby invited us into her home for a cool drink. Her friendly hospitality will be long remembered. She told us that everybody is wondering what happened to the Anasazi Indians. "We're still here" was her response. |
